Descriere:
A society of artists named The World of Art surrounded Russian ballet impresario Sergei Diaghilev (1872-1929) and created breathtakingly colorful and expressive paintings, illustrations, stage designs, and decorative objects. Their variety of styles encompassed Realism, Symbolism, and Expressionism during one of the most creative eras in Russian art.
Following introductory material by general editor Petrova and Vladimir Lenyashin (both of the State Russian Museum), a chapter covers the artistic achievements linked to Diaghilev.
This is followed by capsule biographies of the 72 artists represented here.
The meat of this handsome book, however, is the collection of over 400 paintings and other objects depicted in vibrant color and black-and-white reproductions.
Artists like L on Bakst, the scenery and costume designer for the Ballets Russes; book illustrator Ivan Bilibin; and painters Wassily Kandinsky, Mikhail Nesterov, and Mikhail Vrubel may be familiar, but many other gifted artists are also celebrated here.
On display at the State Russian Museum, these works are rarely seen by Western eyes, which makes this book an indispensable source of information about l'art russe. Very highly recommended for all art, design, and Russian studies collections.
