The extensive collection of erotic prints and lithographs presented in this book originates mainly from the France of the July Monarchy (1830-48). The reign of Louis Philippe, the bourgeois king, was relatively quiet and uneventful, and was marked by the ascendancy of the bourgeoisie, economic prosperity and surprisingly relaxed censorship laws. It was also the period in which the new technique of lithography, originating in a Germany which enjoyed a less liberal cultural climate, became widespread in France. In its role as a modern and economical technique for the mass reproduction of images, lithography made art available to a large public for the first time.
