Descriere:
The Romanian national style was created in the last two decennia of the 19th century, the first building in this style dating from 1886. In this period, architects established which were the adequate inspiration sources to create a Romanian national style and they found it in the medieval architecture of the Romanian Country and Moldavia and in the Walachian vernacular architecture. After the General Exposition in 1906, this style witnessed success on a large scale, being favored by the authorities for public edifices, as well as for private orders. The style is adapted to the demands imposed by public monumental architecture programs, whereby historical allusions are preferred at the expense of the vernacular architecture. The style became official in the period between the two world wars a mark of Great Romania and is confronted to both the aesthetical and ideological issues, as a result of modernist competition, for its questionable ability to reflect the “essence of the Romanian soul”.
