Tadao Ando: The Colours of Light is the result of ten years’ collaboration between the English photographer Richard Pare and Japan’s leading architect, Tadao Ando (b. 1941). This book includes twenty-seven of Ando’s buildings, completed over the last fifteen years, including the notable Kidosaki House, Tokyo, 1986, the Church on the Water, Hokkaido, 1988 and the Meditation Space for Unesco, Paris, 1995.
Richard Pare’s images break with previous conventions of architectural representation; he distils the ‘essence’ of Ando’s buildings rather than producing literal portraits, and concentrates on the subtle effects of natural light on architecture. The photographic portfolio is complemented by an introductory essay by Tom Heneghan and drawings by Tadao Ando accompany each project description.
The Colours of Light was first published in 1996 to critical acclaim, and now for the first time it is available as a miniature edition.
