Giulio Carlo Argan (1909-82) was one of Italy's most esteemed art historians and critics, and the author of numerous studies. He taught at the University of Palermo and the University of Rome, and was mayor of Rome from 1976 to 1979 and later a member of the Italian Senate. Bruno Contardi, a student of Giulio Carlo Argan, is the author of several works on Renaissance and Baroque sculpture and architecture.
